Ethicon in San Angelo has announced that it will eliminate 30 salaried positions by year's end, a company spokeswoman said.
The company is experiencing an ongoing realignment, said Jackie Jankewicz of Ethicon's public relations group. The types and amount of processing at the San Angelo plant have changed in the past few months, she said.
"We had a change in volumes," Jankewicz said. "We can't support those 30 salary positions as a result."
Ethicon is a Johnson & Johnson company that produces sutures and medical needles.
The employees affected are salaried and, as such, not union-represented.
Jankewicz said employees have been offered a severance package and help through the company's outplacement program. Ethicon's standard severance package includes two weeks of pay for every year of service.
"It was a difficult decision," Jankewicz said.
Information about the average salary of employees affected was not available, Jankewicz said.
Before the announced layoffs, the company had 650 employees in San Angelo. Jankewicz said the company has no plans at this time to leave San Angelo.

No plans to leave San Angelo? Ethicon has been slowly leaving San Angelo for 20 years. It is just easier for them do business outside the US, cheaper labor and less regulation.

Just a food for thought? Yes, Ethicon is leaving San Angelo and going to South America. This should not be new news to San Angelo City and or anybody else. Look at Verizon. I predict it will be closed completly by October of 2009, Texas is out of their way for their business and so is Ethicon. Move to another city outside that is what we did. Not that its better economy wise but at least they pay you what your worth on the market with a college degree.
